This post is aimed at taking you on a step by step guide on how to partake in the Leiden University Excellence Scholarships for Masters Degree scholars.

This post will also provide you with all the informations you need to be a part of this scholarship.

Location: The location of this scholarship is the Netherlands and the next course starts Sept 2020


About the Scholarship: The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is a hospitable and outstanding Non-EU/EEA students scholarship that runs during a full-time master’s degree programme at Leiden University.

Host Institution(s): The host institution of this scholarship remains Leiden University, Netherlands.


Level/Field of study: All Masters programmes (with the exception of normal LLM (non-advanced) programmes) within the following Faculties below:




Governance and Global Affairs

Law, Social and Behavioural Sciences


Interfacultair Centrum Voor Lerarenopleiding

Onderwijsontwikkeling en Nascholing (ICLON)

African Studies Centre

International Institute for Asian Studies


Number of Awards: The number and sort of award of the scholarship always depend on the budget available for every Faculty department.


Target group: The target groups are the Non-EU/EEA international students


Scholarship value/duration: The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship programme has 3 awards:

• € 10.000 of the schooling fee
• € 15.000 of the schooling fee
• Total tuition fee minus the statutory tuition fee


Eligibility: To be eligible for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarships, Students must have achieved excellent study leads in their previous education, this must be relevant to the Master’s programme that they’re applying. As a signthe scholar should be amongst the highest 10% of graduates in his/her previous study programme. Note: proof of ranking isn’t required – this information is only to point the extent of competitiveness.

Applicants must have a non-EEA passport and should not be eligible for support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering).


Application process: You must first apply online for admissions to a Master’s programme at Leiden University. In your application, you should indicate clearly why you need the LExS scholarship and upload your letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship on the scholarship page.

The deadline for programmes starting in September is 1 February (exception – LLM Advanced Studies programmes: 1 March) while programmes starting in February features a deadline of 1 October.
